The Government of India launched the new MSME Udyam Registration Portal on 26th June 2020, replacing the earlier Udyog Aadhar system. The new registration process officially commenced on 1st July 2020.

What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the system used by the government to identify businesses that qualify as micro, small, or medium enterprises (MSME). Upon completion of Udyam registration, businesses are assigned an identification number called Udyam Registration Number (URN), as well as a Udyam Registration Certificate. Udyam registration is also commonly referred to as MSME registration.

Udyam Registration aims to simplify the lengthy and complicated process of registering a business in the MSME sector, while providing an easy, online, and accessible way for all eligible business entities to obtain MSME registration.

Eligible entities for Udyam Registration include:

  • Proprietorships

  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUF)

  • Partnerships

  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)

  • Private Limited Companies

  • Co-operative Societies

  • One Person Companies (OPC)

  • Other business entities with a legal structure

What is the Udyam Registration Portal?

The Udyam Registration Portal is an official Government of India platform developed by the Ministry of MSME to simplify business classification and registration for micro, small, and medium enterprises. The Udyam System is entirely digital, streamlined, and easy to use.

Key Features and Objectives of the Udyam Registration Portal:

  • When you complete your registration, you will receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number.

  • Once your business has completed its registration process, it will receive a digital Udyam Registration Certificate. The digital certificate contains a dynamic QR code, which can be scanned to access the business’s information directly from the Udyam portal.

  • There is no need to renew your registration; your registration will automatically remain valid for the lifetime of your business.

  • All registrations are completed online, paperless, and on the basis of self-declaration only. You do not have to upload any documents or provide proof as part of the registration.

  • You only need your Aadhar Number to begin the process of registering under Udyam.

  • Since 1 April 2021, you must also have a valid GST and PAN to complete your registration process.

Important Notes:

  • Businesses that were previously registered under EM-II, Udyog Aadhar (UAM), or any other MSME authority must re-register under the Udyam system.

  • A business can file only one Udyam Registration, but it can include multiple activities, whether in manufacturing, services, or both, under a single registration.

Udyam Registration Process for Existing Enterprises

  • Enterprises registered on or before 30th June 2020 will be reclassified based on the new MSME definitions mentioned in the government notification

  • These existing registrations will remain valid only up to 31st March 2021. After this date, enterprises must obtain a new Udyam Registration to continue availing of MSME benefits.
