Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are an important part of the national economy. MSMEs provide production capacity, create jobs, generate export activity, and contribute to the overall development of an economy. In many states, especially in Odisha, MSME businesses create significant numbers of jobs, second only to jobs created by the agriculture sector.
MSMEs account for nearly forty percent of all exports from India, and forty-five percent of all manufacturing output from India. As a result of the importance of these contributions by MSMEs the Government of India has created a separate Department of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises to foster greater competitiveness through assistance and resources at the state level.
The goal of the State Government is to revitalize the MSME sector; ensure that MSMEs are placed at the top of the priority list when it comes to implementing new business policies and support programs; provide a structured and sustainable pathway for MSMEs; and create a structured process of assistance to MSMEs that includes grants and financial assistance.
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of the Ministry of MSME Registration and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, made this announcement on August 18 at the virtual event "Building Vehicles, Engineering Components & Aggregates." While announcing the proposal, he said, "We are going to give the status of MSMEs also to the dealers, so that they can also avail themselves of the various support schemes provided by MSMEs."
In addition, Nitin Gadkari highlighted how the government is focusing on creating an integrated transportation system through various modes of transport, including rivers, marine transport, railways, roadways and air transport, while stressing that improvements to logistics will reduce costs substantially, which will help factories and manufacturers grow within each sector.
Business representatives were encouraged by the Minister to submit innovative proposals that align with India’s ambition to become a global automotive manufacturing hub. He expressed his belief that the government has committed to providing whatever is necessary to see this dream become a reality.
The Minister further emphasized that all MSMEs, whether in manufacturing or services, must register to benefit from various government schemes. Registered MSMEs are entitled to:
Tariff, revenue, and capital subsidies
Access to government tenders and contracts
Eligibility for low-interest loans and financial support
To achieve the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), Gadkari called for a reduction in imports and a boost in local manufacturing, especially in sectors like automotive and construction equipment. He stressed the importance of upgrading research, technology, and innovation, and encouraged joint ventures and foreign collaborations with compatible technology and financing options.
Gadkari further stated that he would like to see larger companies pay off their debts to MSME as soon as possible because delays may cause disruptions to their operations. In addition, he noted that the MSME Ministry had been working with the Ministry of Finance on providing tax incentives for those industries that were establishing technology centres, training institutions and/or research centres.
"We are working closely with the MSME and requesting them for additional assistance to promote industries to invest in innovation and R&D", stated Gadkari.
